Pancake Day in London

When Christmas is over and Easter is not yet here, the number one question is when is Pancake Day? In 2019, Pancake Day falls on Tuesday the 5th March. Even though we can enjoy pancakes on any day of the year, Shrove Tuesday is the time to enjoy this flipping marvellous food.

What is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day is a traditional feast before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Lent is typically a Christian festival where worshippers eat sparingly for 40 days, so Pancake Day is treated as the last big feast before Lent begins.

When is Pancake Day?

Shrove Tuesday falls in either February or March and it is the last day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Pancake Day is on a different day every year because the date of Easter changes every year due to different cycles of the moon. However, it is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

Pancake Day Events in London

There are a number of traditional Pancake Day races in London for a number of different charities. You can take part in a race or simply turn up on the day to support the participants.

Parliamentary Pancake Race

Teams of MPs, Lords and members of the press go up against one another in the Parliamentary Pancake Race. The 2018 race took place in Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster. It is organised by the charity Rehab, which helps people with mental and physical disabilities and the vulnerable to rebuild independent lives. Watch parliamentary figures, Lords and media staff flip pancakes, run and wear silly hats for a great cause.

The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race

Egg on your favourite fancy dressed team on Brick Lane's cobbled side streets to see who wins the coveted winner's engraved frying pan. The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race takes place at midday on Shrove Tuesday to raise money for London’s Air Ambulance. You can enter a team of four in advance or enter on the day if you bring a donation. All entrants will be rewarded with hot pancakes!

Leadenhall Market Pancake Race

Are your pancake tossing skills up to the task to enter the legendary Leadenhall Market race? Flip your way through one of the most picturesque markets in the capital whilst you tackle the 20m course with your chance to be the prized possessor of a frying pan trophy! Teams must register in advance or can enter on the day at The Lamb Tavern.
