What is London Fashion Week?

Fashion week is a trade event which gives London Fashion Week designers the opportunity to showcase their new collections in front of industry leaders and influencers. It allows fashion editors and buyers to identify key trends for next season whilst amping up the hype and coverage for budding and high profile designers. London Fashion Week is the second exclusive event in the fashion industry calendar and takes place after New York Fashion Week. It is invitation only and is open to industry leaders, celebrities with close relationships with designers and press.

But fear not! You can get your fashion fix by attending the London Fashion Week Festival on the weekend after fashion week. This is a ticketed event for the general public, with ticket packages ranging from just £20 to £200 each.

When is London Fashion Week?

London Fashion Week takes place twice a year, and the London Fashion Week Festival is held on the weekend directly after fashion week. The London Fashion Week dates fall in the following months each year:

February - designers showcase their Autumn/Winter collection for later that year

September - designers showcase their Spring/Summer collections for the following year

Men's Fashion Week is usually held in January and June in preparation for the following seasons.

Fashion Week Vs. Fashion Week Festival

Fashion Week in London is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and is not open to the general public. It incorporates a range of events and opportunities for both leading and new designers to showcase their collections. Although you may not be eligible to attend, there are live streams of runway shows available to watch online. Shows and presentations are usually themed and should leave you feeling a strong emotion, either one way or another.

Designers opting for catwalk fashion shows in London invite a select number of guests to admire their collections. However, some designers prefer to hold a presentation of their collection in a more intimate and creative setting, or host London fashion week events and invite an exclusive guest list to admire their work.

The London Fashion Week Festival is held in the official London Fashion Week location in The Store Studios, 180 Strand. The four-day festival is open to the public and invites ticket holders to shop at over 150 brands for accessories, jewellery and ready to wear collections at exclusive prices. You can attend talks by industry experts and fashion influencers and there is also the opportunity to sit on the front row for designer and trend catwalk shows.

There are 5 different ticket packages available ranging from a basic festival entry ticket to LUXE VIP tickets. You will have the opportunity to pick up a limited edition fashion week tote bag and, depending on what ticket you buy, it may be filled with products from sponsors and brands. You will be allocated a specific time frame for your ticket session to keep crowds to a minimum so you should check the schedule and plan your day before arrival.

How to buy tickets for London Fashion Week

Unfortunately, members of the public are not eligible to buy tickets for London Fashion Week as these are exclusively for leaders in the fashion industry. However, if you are a high profile fashion blogger or digital influencer, you might be able to apply for tickets if you meet the criteria. Members of the general public can buy tickets for the London Fashion Week Festival instead and you can sign up to alerts for when tickets next go on sale.

What to wear to London Fashion Week

At London Fashion Week, anything goes. London is well known for having an eclectic and eccentric mix-and-match approach to fashion. So, London Fashion Week is a great opportunity to experiment with unique, stand out pieces and unusual combinations.

Express your personality and personal style by wearing clothes that make you feel amazing and full of confidence. Wear British brands which showcase British designers, eye-catching colours or mix different prints and try something new. Whatever you decide to wear, remember that comfortable, sensible shoes are a must and outerwear is important at any time of year because the weather in the capital is so unpredictable.

When you are not experimenting with daring street styles, plan your outfits to suit the seasons in London and discover what to wear throughout the year.

London Fashion Week Catwalk Shows

Catwalk shows at London Fashion Week are notoriously difficult to get tickets for. Some of the catwalk shows take place in the BFC show space but this obviously has a limited capacity. Therefore the guest list will be carefully selected to consist of the most relevant editors, press and celebrities for that designer.

This means that the general public cannot attend. However, the catwalk shows are live-streamed and you may be able to attend catwalk shows at the London Fashion Week Festival. Depending on which ticket you choose you may be able to attend a designer fashion show or a trend show, made up of pieces from various designers based on the same trend. With LUXE tickets you will get the ultimate VIP experience including front row seats at a designer or trend show.

London Fashion Week Schedule

London Fashion Week is run to a tight schedule. It varies each season depending on the designers taking part, however, designers will be given specific time slots for their shows, presentations or events.

The Fashion Week Festival is organised in a similar way, with catwalks and industry talks running to a specific schedule over the four days. Catwalk shows generally last around 45 minutes and you can choose from available catwalk shows during the booking process. Additionally, if there are any specific industry talks that you wish to attend, you can pre-book tickets for these.

You will be able to shop a curated edit of designer collections for ready-to-wear fashion from over 150 brands over the course of the festival.  However, with a festival ticket, you will be given a specific time slot, for example, 12.30pm-3pm, and you should arrive around 45 minutes before your slot to make the most of your time at the festival.

Get a head start for the following season when you follow London Fashion Week online or attend the London Fashion Week Festival. You don’t need to be a budding designer to enjoy the London Fashion Week Festival.
