Time to take a trip around the world as we continue our Cuisine Country Tour of London. This time we explore South America, and more specifically, Peru!
In the form of a glamorous basement bar and restaurant, Coya in Mayfair offers you contemporary Peruvian cuisine in a vibrant and culturally-rich setting. The menu includes a diverse range of delicious food, including ceviches, tiraditos, anticuchoes, and other meat and fish grills within an environment that has three kitchens within it. If you need something to wash down all the food, the Pisco Bar carries over 40 tequilas and specialises in bespoke Pisco infusions. One of the big draws of Peruvian food is that it's perfect for the health conscious people out there with dishes that avoid fatty ingredients or excess carbs. If you're visiting during lunch, the healthy set menu offers you a lighter meal, with accompanying juice and smoothie selections too!
Based in Fitzrovia, Lima was the first Peruvian restaurant in London to gain a Michelin star, and due to its success, a second restaurant opened in Covent Garden. Lima offers fine-dining, but not as you know it! With painted brick walls, Aztec artworks, tiled floors, and flowers imported from the Amazon, you'll feel like you're in the Peruvian capital of Lima. With food that is a carnival of colours which reflects the vibrant culture of South America, the cuisine you'll enjoy is carefully sourced from the UK with organic and wild produce from growers in Peru. Some of the must-eat dishes include the salmon tiradito and the hot ceviche of grilled sea bass, corn puree and yellow aji pepper.
With restaurants in Soho and Old Street, and sister sites in Shoreditch and Soho, Ceviche's first location in Soho offers the traditional buzz you'd expect of the West End with décor based on a Bar Juanito which is a bohemian restaurant in Lima. The Soho restaurant is noted to have kicked started the capital's love for Peruvian cuisine and with super salads, sizzling barbecued dishes and a Pisco Sour, you're definitely not going to be disappointed with your Peruvian culinary experience!
For a slight twist on the traditional Peruvian food, why not try Chotto Matte in Soho. With a Japanese-Peruvian fusion, known as Nikkei cuisine, this bubbly place in Soho takes inspiration from the Japanese immigrants in Peru, and the combination is spectacular! In a fun club-like vibe with dark interiors and flashy graffiti on the walls, you'll enjoy a comprehensive menu featuring sushi, sashimi, soups, salads, and grills. For the food conscious out there, all the ingredients are natural, locally produced, non GMO and with no artificial flavourings. After you've filled up on food, pop downstairs to the lively bar serving Nikkei-inspired Pisco, Shochu, and Sake to really increase the excitement of your trip!
UNI in Belgravia takes its name from the Japanese word for sea urchin, and you'll feel like you've delved into its watery wonders in its gorgeous and intimate restaurant setting. Upstairs you'll find a bar serving creative cocktails and Pisco, whilst downstairs cosy culinary delights await. Foods on offer range from sushi and sashimi as well as the traditionals of tiraditos, tacos, and ceviche. Embracing all the colours, flavours and textures of Peruvian and Japanese fusion cuisine, you can enjoy two of the most vibrant and contrasting cultures all under one roof!
Pachamama is a Peruvian-inspired bar and restaurant in Marylebone that is dedicated to making the most of the extraordinary ingredients available in the UK. With a strong South American theme and vibe, this is the place to be if you're after the tipples of Peru, with its spirit of choice at the bar being their Pisco - Peruvian grape brandy, as well as an extensive cocktail list which showcases all the country's beverages. Never fear though if you're also after the finest Peruvian cuisine as Pachamama provides you with plenty of dishes including sea bass, spicy beef, smoked mushrooms or smoked cheddar tequeños, so you won't be left hungry!
